In this discussion, we explore the creation and evolution of the ICYJ, including its core pillars of activity—such as the Youth Justice minor, research, symposia, and internship opportunities—and how these efforts are helping shape the future of the field. Dr. Rita Poteyeva

Department of Justice Studies Associate Professor & Innovation Center for Youth Justice Director | James Madison University

Rita Poteyeva is an Associate Professor in the Department of Justice Studies. She currently serves as the Director of the Innovation Center for Youth Justice (ICYJ). Teaching and doing research in the field of youth justice since 2012, Dr. Poteyeva spearheaded the proposal of the youth justice minor program at JMU and currently serves as its coordinator. Dr. Poteyeva’s published scholarship focuses on the intersection of gender and sentencing, violence against women, and citizens’ evaluation of the criminal justice system and policies. Her work has appeared in such major peer-reviewed publications as Journal of Criminal Justice, Violence & Victims, and the Journal of Social Science. She earned her master’s degree in criminal justice at Eastern Kentucky University and her doctorate in criminology at the University of Delaware.
